Tools and Materials Needed
- Socket set and wrenches
- Jack and jack stands or a
lift
- Torque wrench
- Clutch alignment tool
(usually comes with the new clutch kit)
- Screwdrivers
- Pry bar
- Transmission fluid
- Clutch kit (clutch disc,
pressure plate, release bearing)
- Pilot bearing (if
applicable)
- Brake cleaner
- Thread locker (optional)
Steps to Change the Clutch
1. Prepare the Vehicle
- Park the car on a flat
surface and engage the parking brake.
- Disconnect the negative
terminal of the battery.
- Lift the car using a jack
and secure it on jack stands or a lift.
- Remove the front wheels for
better access.
2. Remove Components Blocking the
Transmission
- Drain the transmission fluid
by removing the drain plug.
- Disconnect the shift
linkage, electrical connectors, and speed sensor.
- Remove the starter motor.
- Detach the driveshafts
(axles) from the transmission.
- Support the engine with an
engine support bar or jack.
3. Remove the Transmission
- Unbolt the transmission
bellhousing from the engine.
- Carefully slide the
transmission away from the engine. You may need a transmission jack to
support its weight.
- Once the transmission is
removed, you’ll have access to the clutch assembly.
4. Remove the Old Clutch
- Mark the position of the
pressure plate and flywheel for proper alignment during reinstallation.
- Loosen and remove the bolts
securing the pressure plate.
- Remove the pressure plate
and clutch disc.
- Inspect the flywheel for
wear or damage. Resurface or replace it if necessary.
5. Install the New Clutch
- Clean the flywheel surface
with brake cleaner.
- Install the new pilot
bearing (if applicable) using the appropriate tool.
- Place the new clutch disc
against the flywheel, ensuring the correct orientation (usually marked
"flywheel side").
- Attach the new pressure
plate and align it using the clutch alignment tool.
- Tighten the pressure plate
bolts in a crisscross pattern to the specified torque.
6. Reinstall the Transmission
- Carefully slide the
transmission back onto the engine, ensuring the input shaft engages with
the clutch disc.
- Reattach the bellhousing
bolts and tighten them to the specified torque.
- Reconnect the driveshafts,
shift linkage, and electrical connectors.
- Refill the transmission with
the recommended fluid.
7. Reassemble and Test
- Reinstall the starter motor
and any other components removed earlier.
- Reconnect the battery.
- Lower the car and test the
clutch pedal for proper operation.
- Take the car for a test
drive to ensure the clutch is functioning correctly.
